The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests...
Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus. Walk and Turn. One Leg Stand.
I repeat this phrase so many times during my SFST certification program that it's
thought to be a joke at first. The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests... Horizontal Gaze
Nystagmus... Walk and Turn... One leg Stand.
It seems so simple. The procedure to determine if a driver is too impaired to operate
a vehicle - the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests... Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus...
Walk and Turn... One Leg Stand.
Even though there may be a couple of snickers at first, and quite a few eyes rolling
after this phrase has been mentioned a dozen or so times, the point is simple. The
Standardized Field Sobriety Tests are much more than a series of random hoops to
jump through during an arrest for OWI. The SFST's are a discipline that has been
tested time and again, with hundreds of court cases setting precedences across the
United States.
As with any discipline, it is important to learn the standardized method, practice the
procedures and put the procedures into practice the same way, each and every time
you investigate for OWI.
The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn,
One Leg Stand.
These tests are relatively simple to conduct, have been researched with evidence
supporting the conclusions necessary in court and, most importantly, are recognized
by every jurisdiction in the nation as verifiable indicators of impairment.
This is why it is important - required even - to conduct the SFST's as supplied by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) every time you encounter an
impaired driver.
