Certified Field Training Officer Midwest Law Enforcement Training Institute www.mleti.com I founded the Midwest Law Enforcement Training Institute (MLETI) as a means to increase my instructional opportunities and conduct research in the field of law enforcement report writing. Current projects include the development of a standardized police report writing method, submission of technical articles to law enforcement periodicals and authoring of two books that address the subject. MLETI became a certified training provider under the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board in 2007. Academic Teaching Experience Report Writing In 1998, the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Training Center saw a need for a report writing program. With a background in media and communications, I was asked to develop a four hour course that was to be presented during in-service training many times during the academic year. The demand for the program grew and soon the course was expanded to include field interviewing techniques and courtroom testimony. In 2004, I developed a twelve hour basic report writing program specifically for the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy recruit class. Courtroom Testimony The Courtroom Testimony program was developed after several students of the Report Writing in-service program asked about how to present their reports in a courtroom setting. The topic was added to the report writing course and eventually expanded to a four then six hour stand alone course offering. Students study the courtroom proceedings as indicated in the Indiana State Statutes, basic presentation techniques and critique video taped courtroom proceedings. The six hour program features a moot court with prosecuting attorneys appearing as guest lecturers. Standardized Field Sobriety Testing I received specialized training and instructor certification through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the field of OWI Detection and administering the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) battery of tests. I greatly enjoy this field because I believe that our society deserves to be protected from people who make poor choices and drive impaired. Domestic Violence I completed a Domestic Violence instructor certification course through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and was immediately designated as a Domestic Violence Officer for the Town of Munster Police Department. I have presented the FLETC program as in-service training through the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and conduct annual mandated training programs for the Town of Munster Police Department. Media Relations Prior to law enforcement, I spent ten years as a full time working member of the news media and am still an active freelance sports announcer.
